Identity Pills Labels
This new series of digital prints are “product labels” based on the
web art project Nanodramas. The NanoDramas project presents a
sarcastic view of certain aspects of contemporary life, such as the
power of advertising and the pervasive influence of media on our
minds, the consumerism of pharmaceutical products and the purchase of
entertainment. It explores the idea of constructing one’s identity
based on the acquisition of images and pre-formulated models of being,
resulting on an increased lack of self-understanding. Nanodramas is
presented as a product line, with product names such as “Pink War”,
“Nature” and “Rubber Candy”.
Rodrigo de Toledo is a Brazilian award-winning artist, designer,
educator, and a pioneer in the digital arts. His work, an imaginative
blend of writing, graphic arts, multimedia and animation, has been
showcased on PBS, Forbes Magazine, How Magazine, Canal+ France, Globo
TV Brazil, TV Educativa Brazil, Leonardo Journal, NASA online among
others, as well as screened and exhibited in festivals, galleries and
museums worldwide. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Visual
Communication at Northern Arizona University.
